…when your child joins our S1 in August.
The Situation
The first day of secondary school is a big moment. We work hard to make it a welcoming, positive start for every young person.
What We’ll Do
- Welcome your child at the entrance to the Campus which will be the S1 Playground for them.
- Your child will line up in their new class and hear a welcome message from the Head Teacher and Depute Head Teacher/ Year Head.
- Buddies will available to guide and support your child. They will help them navigate around the Campus. S1 classes will be dismissed 5 minutes earlier than all other classes to allow to pupils to move around the corridors with ease.
- The day will begin with an extended registration period to build relationships between pupil and register teacher, to go over timetables, routines, and expectations of the Campus. Register teachers will answer any questions your child may have.
- Your child will then attend an Assembly with the Head Teacher, Year Head and PT Pastoral.
- We will support at lunchtime to ensure everyone manages to eat.
- Address any issues that arise and keep parents/carers informed as necessary.
How We’ll Support Your Child
- Use staff at key points to help with confidence building.
- Be understanding if your child is nervous, unsure, or overwhelmed. We will provide support as required.
- Keep a supportive eye on all new S1s throughout the day and check in regularly.
How You Can Support at Home
- Reassure your child that it’s normal to feel a bit nervous—others feel the same.
- Help them get ready the night before: uniform, bag packed, good sleep etc.
- Remind your child who they can go to if they need help (Pastoral PT, Year Head, Office staff, Campus Police Officer, Area Inclusion Officer, any adult they trust)
- Check in at the end of the day – ask open questions and celebrate the little wins.
- Keep in touch with the Campus if there are any issues.
