Art and Tech: Miss McKeown Interview

The brand new Faculty Head of a the Art and Tech department, Miss McKeown, has graced the school in the short time that she has been here. The students have grown a very strong bond with her already. I was lucky to catch up with her for an interview.

Q: How did you become a teacher?

A: When I was in S6 my art and tech teachers were both encouraging me into teaching. I chose tech as my pathway after S6. I decided I was very young so I finished my degree but went into purchasing. I used to be a purchaser for a company called V.Ships where I bought spare parts for 20 oil tankers/cargo holders, I would send the parts all around the world to meet the vessels, it was very interesting! After a few years I decided I was ready to become a teacher and completed the Post Graduate course… And here I am 🙂

Q: What are you most proud of in your teaching career?

A: I was very proud of being promoted into Principal teacher at Auchenharvie after only a couple of years teaching. In my post as PT DYW in Auchenharvie, I helped many pupils secure apprenticeships and they have gone on to become very successful in their careers. The best reward as a teacher is seeing your pupils become successful in a career in your subject!

Q: What do you like to do to unwind when you are not in the classroom?

A: I have my own side business where I take commissions and draw portraits of people’s pets and family members! I love drawing so this really helps me relax.

Q: What do you love about being part of the Garnock community?

A: Everyone has been so welcoming since I arrived at Garnock. I love seeing the values in action all around the school. The pupils are very lucky to have such a modern school with caring staff.

Q: What is one of your proudest moments?

A: My Higher Art & Design work was shortlisted to the top 5 in Scotland and travelled all around the country. My original final piece was displayed in Kelvingrove Art Museum and currently hangs in London parliament. I signed the rights away to it and only have a laser copy of it!
