Ayrshire Cup Quarter-Final: Garnock 4–5 Belmont

Our first match report by Mr Vernon as Garnock take on Belmont on Wednesday, February 19.

Garnock’s cup run ended in heartbreaking fashion after a dramatic 5–4 defeat to Belmont, despite a stirring performance full of character, quality and fight.

Belmont raced into an early 2–0 lead, leaving Garnock with it all to do. The response was outstanding. Jack Gunn sparked the comeback with a brilliant solo run, driving at the defence before unleashing a shot that crashed in off the post to halve the deficit.

Momentum continued to build and Garnock were level when Eden Spencer rose highest at a corner, powering home a towering header to make it 2–2. The turnaround was complete soon after as Tyler Fleck tapped in at the end of a superb team move, putting Garnock 3–2 ahead.

Belmont equalised to make it 3–3, but the hosts refused to be denied. Garnock edged back in front at 4–3 when Fleck grabbed his second of the match, finishing smartly after an unbelievable turn and surging run down the wing from David Stuart.

With the tie finely poised, Belmont struck twice late on — the second coming in the dying minutes — to snatch a cruel 5–4 victory and book their place in the semi-finals.

Despite the result, there were standout performances throughout, none more so than Ryan Grant, who was deservedly named Man of the Match for a tireless display of relentless running, skill and heart from first whistle to last.

To the boys — thank you. Thank you for your effort, your commitment and the pride you’ve shown in wearing the jersey this season. Every game, -every battle, every comeback — you’ve given everything. We couldn’t be prouder of what you’ve achieved together. This one hurts, but it will make us stronger. Heads high — we go again next season.
