Garnock Campus is one of only TWO schools in Scotland to take part in the next Polar Academy Expedition.
Last week, pupils met the team from the Polar Academy as part of the selection process and impressed them with their enthusiasm for the project.
The Polar Academy offers 10 young people the opportunity to undergo 10 months of rigorous training. This includes weekend endurance hikes in Scotland while dragging heavy tyres, circuit training, and intensive outdoor instruction.
Miss Still said: “This is a huge achievement for our school and an incredible opportunity for our young people.
“A huge thank you to everyone who supported the interview process.
“Craig and Lorna were really impressed with the classes they visited and the pupils they met, and it was fantastic to receive such positive feedback about our young people and school.”
Now, Craig Mathieson from the Polar Academy will be coming into school to deliver assemblies to all pupils, sharing his incredible story and introducing them to the Polar Academy experience.
Following the assemblies, and a selection process 15 pupils will be selected to take part in training with the final 10 going on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to either Finland or Greenland.
Then, Craig and his team will then be in school weekly to train and support the selected pupils in preparation for the expedition.
The experience is completely free for pupils, with around £250,000 of funding and support being provided to the school.
As a thank you, the school will be raising funds for the charity to show appreciation for their generosity and there will be lots of opportunities for staff and pupils to get involved in this.
This is a huge achievement for our school and an incredible opportunity for our young people.
Miss Still added: “What an adventure lies ahead.”
