Glasgow Airport this year and last year has celebrated many new route wins and has no intention of stopping anytime soon! They are looking ahead and planning routes for 2028, with potential destinations including China, Pakistan, and India. After a recent meeting with the executives of Glasgow Airport, I managed to gain some insider info about potential new routes, and I want to share them with you along with some statistics that show these routes are very feasible.
European Routes
Glasgow Airport is currently aiming for many new European routes. Here’s what they said: They are targeting a new Munich route with Lufthansa this winter, as Germany seems to be a strong market. Peak summer load factors to Germany are impressive—92.8% on routes to Berlin with EasyJet and Frankfurt with Lufthansa!
The airport currently has no Scandinavian routes, so they aim to reinstate a connection there as well. They are considering either Copenhagen or Oslo, with flights operated by Norwegian Airlines or EasyJet. Connecting passenger load factors from 2025 onto Scandinavia from destinations like Amsterdam and Dublin reach an astonishing 21% across the year.
Transatlantic Flights
Glasgow Airport lost many of its transatlantic flights after the previous management actively pushed airlines out. Recent wins have seen the reinstatement of a WestJet Toronto route, competing with Air Transat, and a Newark, New York route with United Airlines.
The airport is also aiming for flights to Philadelphia with American Airlines, and they have had preliminary talks with Delta Airlines about flights to Boston, Atlanta, and JFK, as well as discussions with Air Canada for Montréal, though with limited success. Load factors to Toronto with Air Transat are extremely high, averaging 99.29%, which strongly suggests the potential for more transatlantic routes to Glasgow in the future.
Asian and Middle Eastern Routes
Glasgow Airport sees extraordinary potential in the Asian and Middle Eastern markets, with demand rising rapidly! Their daily A380-800 route to Dubai consistently reaches 100% load factors, reinforcing the strength of the market.
Emirates is currently in talks for a second daily Dubai route with either the B777-300 or A350-900, which would operate later in the day. Glasgow Airport also plans to have Pakistan routes by 2027, with three weekly flights to Lahore, negotiating with PIA Pakistan International Airlines.
They are also in talks with Air India and IndiGo about flights to India by 2028, and discussions with an anonymous Chinese airline about Shanghai flights for 2028.
What I Think May Come In
I believe BA could potentially reinstate their Chambéry route, and Virgin Atlantic might reopen their Glasgow Airport base, offering routes to JFK, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. These are my personal predictions and should be taken as possibilities rather than confirmed plans.
I really hope Glasgow Airport gives their best effort to win all these new routes. Thanks for reading this article!
