The History of Robert Burns

Robert Burns was a Scottish poet from Alloway on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland. He was born on the 25th of January 1759 and died on the 21st of July 1796.

Burns’ first poem was ‘O Once I Lov’d (A Bonnie Lass) and he wrote it when he was 15 to impress a girl called Nellie. The first song he ever wrote was ‘Handsome Nell’.

Some of his more well known works would be: Auld Lang Syne, To A Mouse, Tam O’shanter, and many more! These works are recited many times around Burns Night.

This year marks the 265th anniversary since Robert Burns’ birth! Making it an extremely special one!

The first ever burns night was held in 1801, In Burns cottage in Alloway, which you can visit at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.

So whether your Burns Night consists of big gatherings and events, or calm night in with a plate of haggis, neeps and tatties, it’s very important we remember what its all about!
