Winter Dressing Tips

Winter dressing, with so many extra layers, can be a bit of a pain, but there are so many ways to make an outfit more personal. When going out in the cold it is essential to layer up, choose a cold proof material ,cover your hands and head and keep your feet warm. You can personalise your outfit by accessorising, changing up how you wear certain clothing items and if you are interested you can experimenting with some winter makeup.

You’ve got to think about, coats, gloves, hats, scarves and sometimes even umbrellas. All of these extra layers can hide away your personal style. But winter can also bring exciting new outfit choices , so here are some of our top tips for dressing in the colder seasons.

The essentials for when you are out in about:

  • Layer up. This will help to trap heat and give you lots of options . If you get too warm you can always shed a layer. Stay off with a soft base layer( like a thermal vest), then add a t-shirt , a jumper and then finish with a good winter coat an a scarf.
  • Protect your head and hands. These parts are called the ‘extremities‘ and because they are further away, they are more likely to feel the cold. So protect your head with a warm hat and protect your hands with some warm gloves or mittens to keep everywhere toasty.
  • Keep your feet warm. Just like your fingers and head , your toes need attention too. Thick, moisture-wicking socks and insulated, weather proof walking boots are great options.
  • Sun protection. Yes it might sound weird but the winter sun can be really intense and snow can reflect sunlight. So, it’s really important to wear sunscreen daily.

Now to make your outfit your own…

With all of these extra items and layers, you might feel like your style is getting hidden, but don’t worry. There are lists of ways to make your winter outfit unique.

  • Find your favourite basics. It’s true that once you’ve got the right coat or scarf for the season, you’ll be wearing these items regularly. So look through your current wardrobe and find your “ basics”. If you don’t like anything you currently own, than find some new  basics you will love – you can find these at charity shops, your local swap shop or ask your siblings/ parents/ carers if they have anything spare  instead of buying new.
  • Accessorise. Personalising your outfit with carefully chosen accessories is a great way to go. Think pins , phone cases, bright gloves , jewellery , exciting socks/ tights and maybe even some statement nails.
  • Mix it up. Even though you might be wearing the same items, you can make them different each time. You can try knotting your scarf a different way or wearing your coat buttoned or unbuttoned.
  • Winter makeup (if you’re interested in that). In the colder months, your face is still on display, so you can get creative with it. Stereotypical winter makeup includes blue or copper eye shadow, slightly darker lip colours and warm blushes. But there are no rules here, so go wild.

Plus, once you’re inside, you’ll be able to take off those layers and show off whatever you’re wearing. It’s all about what makes you feel comfortable, confident and warm in the winter.
